Responsibility

We care about the future of those we photograph. This is why all of our operations are steered by environmental and sustainable values. Kuvaverkko takes the environment into account as extensively as possible in all of its operations, and spreads information on the significance of doing so to its customers. Kuvaverkko’s environmental policy covers all of the company’s operations.

EcoCompass environmental certificate

Kuvaverkko was the first photography studio to be granted the EcoCompass environmental certificate in 2015. EcoCompass is an environmental management system which we use to acknowledge the environmental effects of our business and develop our operations from the perspective of sustainable development. The EcoCompass system is audited every three years.

  • We consider environmental perspectives and effects in the design of our business operations.
  • We aim to spread a positive attitude towards nature among our customers and cooperation partners.
  • We favour cooperation partners and interest groups that act in accordance with our environmental policy and integrate environmental thinking as part of their business strategies.
  • The photographic papers, paper sheets and paper products we use are all FSC or PEFC certified.

We also regularly ensure that all valid environmental legislation is considered in our operations, and we also aim to anticipate the development of legislation. We are constantly improving our production processes and work methods, which allows us to reduce the amount of wasted materials. We sort and recycle waste efficiently. For our deliveries, we use e.g. Posti’s carbon-neutral Green services.

Chemical-free photographic printing

In spring 2019, we became the first and only company in Finland to make the leap to the new age of photographic printing. Kuvaverkko’s photos are printed on the photographic paper in an environmentally friendly way without chemicals using HP Indigo equipment, because the chemicals used in traditional photographic printing end up as environmental waste. In non-chemical printing, the ink is transferred directly onto the photographic paper. Because of this, no hazardous waste or carbon dioxide emissions are created during the printing process. In addition to this, HP Indigo is made from durable components that can be recycled after use.

Compensation for carbon dioxide emissions

After acquiring the equipment for more environmentally friendly photographic printing, we determined our reduced carbon footprint, which stands at 110 tonnes (CO2eqv) a year. We aim to compensate for the remainder of our carbon dioxide emissions by growing a new carbon sink in Finland: a forest. This involves removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by reforesting wasteland in cooperation with Puuni Oy. The new carbon sink will be grown in a location that will not be reforested otherwise. The reforestation creates new habitats and ecosystems to help slow down climate change. In 2020, we were the first operator in the photographic industry to launch carbon-neutral photographic products with prices that include compensations for the carbon footprint of the photography service and end product throughout their entire life cycles.
